We’d love to keep them all but we just simply don’t have the room.

We’re offering a great group of 7 male alpacas for just $2400! Six of them are suris and one is a huacaya. But that is not all we’re offering, take delivery before Christmas 2010 and we’ll throw in 5 hay bales of nice orchard grass hay per alpaca FREE!!! Take all 7 alpacas and get 35 bales of orchard grass hay, it may not be enough to last until spring but it would get you most of the way there.

This would be a great group for someone that just wants some fiber animals. Some of the males are still intact, but at this price they come with no guarantees, but you could use them for breeding if you want. If you don’t want all seven alpacas, we’ll break the package up so you can mix and match them. The only stipulation would be that JJ & Thomas stay together.

All 7 of these pictured alpacas plus 35 bales of orchard grass hay for only $2400!!!

The weather cooperated and didn’t rain, but on top of that it wasn’t terribly hot nor was it too cold.? When we arrived we found that we were placed under a nice shade tree across the road near the creek.? Across the open green space there were groups of people spinning and weaving.

It took Cimarron and Silver Ray a little to settle in to the routine of being handled and petted, but they did splendidly.? And Josh, but especially Jake, did a great job of handling them and telling the people about the alpacas.? We had several people comment to us about them and we really appreciated those comments.

We spoke to many people, some were familar with alpaca fiber and the difference between suri and huacaya fiber, but we were able to show many people the differences.? We also had several different stages of processed fiber for people to see, including roving, yarn and sheets of felt.? For those of you that were interested in purchasing some of the fiber, by all means, give us a call or drop us an email so we can make arrangements to get you some of the finest natural fiber in the world.? You can call 1(888)544-SURI (7874) or send an email to ‘info @ bigrockalpacafarm.com’ [without the spaces around the '@' sign].

All in all is was a great day and we got to meet so many nice people.? If any of you would like to visit the farm, please feel free to contact us to schedule a visit, there’s no need to wait for the open house.

Along with getting our hay made we also were taking three alpacas (Frankie, Thomas, and Integrator) over to Paso Ligero Alpacas to get shorn.? It was a big day.? The shearers arrived and started work around 3:00 in the afternoon.? They had already sheared 13 alpacas at a farm in New Jersey before driving the several hours to central PA.

Kim from Paso Ligero Alpacas had graciously opened her farm for several other local farms to bring animals to get shorn. There were a total of about 30 alpacas from at least six different farms.? Below is a picture of Kim collecting a blanket for showing.

Shearing Day

The shearing finished up around 8:00 PM and we all gathered for a pot luck dinner we had brought.?? Kim supplied the hot dogs and burgers.? The shearers grabbed a couple minutes of well deserved rest and some food before they were off to a shearing somewhere in New York state.

It was a very exhausting day for everyone and several passengers fell asleep on the short ride home.

Late ride home

? We recently attended the MAPACA quarterly meeting that was held at the University of Pennsylvannia New Bolton Center.? There was the usual business meeting in the morning where we were given details about the upcoming Jubilee show in Harrisburg.? It sounds like it should be another great year for the show.

After lunch we got to the part that everyone was waiting for, the presentation by Dr.? Walter Bravo on alpaca reproduction.? It was a very informative presentation, covering all aspects of alpaca reproduction, the three main areas being the females, the machos (males) and the cria.? He had great information on fertility and growth rates along with comparisons between South American and North American alpacas.

The final portion of the day was a presentation of what New Bolton Center has to offer alpaca breeders.? The main thing we were interested in was the availability of assistance for problem births and/or late term pregnancy issues.? They can also do quite a bit for infertility issues if that is a problem for either your female or male alpaca.? It’s nice to know there is such a facility near by, it would take us two ours to get there but somewhere like Ohio State would be eight hours or more.
